Daisy the dog lived outside in the Wal-Mart parking lot for two years. Daisy would watch the families entering Wal-Mart and wonder what happened to her family.
When KAT 5 Animal Rescue became aware of her we were told that the local Humane Society and Animal Control had tried to catch her for two years and it was not possible to catch her. KAT 5 Animal Rescue caught Daisy in four days.
In the novel, “Where the Heart Is” by Billie Letts, the protagonist, Novalee Nation, is abandoned pregnant in a Wal-Mart parking lot. We are told that Daisy’s family lived in a house down the street from the Wal-Mart and when they moved they abandoned her there. Luckily Daisy is not pregnant right now, she needs to be spayed, but sadly she does have Heartworm.
The main character in Letts’ novel, Novalee, encounters kind strangers who help her and Daisy found the same in the Wal-Mart parking lot. The local street sweeper, the people at a bank nearby and a night stocker at Wal-Mart have been feeding Daisy for the past two years.
KAT 5 first began going to the parking lot at the hours of dawn to get Daisy comfortable with eating from a consistent spot. On the fourth night food was put in the grated area of Wal-Mart where seasonal plants are placed. Once Daisy entered the plant area one KAT 5 rescuer cut off the exit while another scooped her up. Two years homeless and in one fell swoop little Daisy was given a chance at a real home where she can now blossom like the plants that she once hid amongst.
